How long does it take to obtain a trademark registration in Tanzania?

The process to register a federal trademark generally takes 3 to 6 months from start to finish. With that said, many trademark applications will receive an “Office Action” during the application process. The issuance of an Office Action can slow the process down by several months.

Can you claim priority in Tanzania?

An applicant for registration of a mark who wishes to claim priority based on an earlier application filed in a country that has ratified the Paris Convention, within six months of the date of such earlier application, append to his application

• a written declaration indicating the date and number of the earlier application;
• the name of the applicant and the country in which he or his predecessor in title filed such application; and
• must, before the publication of the application, furnish a copy of the earlier application certified as correct by the appropriate authority of the country in which it was filed.

You may be able to file a protest if the trademark application has not yet been published for opposition. If a trademark application is currently in the publication window, you can file a notice of opposition. If an application has already passed its publication period, you will need to wait for the application to register at which point you may file a cancellation action.
